The swing bridge carries a road, allowing traffic to flow over in its closed position, and pivots 90 degrees horizontally to allow water vessels to pass through to and from the harbour. Its incorporated PLC control and hydraulic control system give the bridge a smooth and silent opening and closing drive. On average, the bridge opens over 1000 times per year, pausing traffic using integrated traffic signalling and barriers.

Since opening, Mid-Anglia has been responsible for continuously developing the bridge with regards to its durability, control, safety, and access.

We’ve also been responsible for the bridge’s annual service, maintenance, repair work, and bi-monthly inspection regime to ensure the bridge remains at a high operational standard.
